on a Fourth of July
Far beyond the stars
on flags waving
from white poles
and draping
the country’s porches.
The bright glimmer
of the summer sun
on the noonday sea.
The glistening jewels
of clustered pebbles,
sea glass and stones
freshly washed and washed
along the shore.
The gleams
in the eyes
of the floating birds
and the children playing
so freely, joyfully
on the foot-soft sand.
